Kaizhe Zhang (b. 1999) is a painter and image-maker based in Shenzhen, China. He studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art from 2018 to 2021. In contrast to traditional chronological methods of artistic production, Kaizhe’s practice is driven by two simultaneous approaches: intuitive experience and image-study research. He considers both to be fundamental to the process of image-making and its critical analysis.

Much of Kaizhe’s research-driven work is subtly integrated into public spaces, where the pieces often mimic the appearance and even the function of everyday objects, making them difficult to detect at first glance. Once noticed, however, they provoke a sense of intrigue, sparking conversations around the concept of "hidden vandalism." This concept challenges the boundaries of visibility and intentionality, encouraging a deeper reflection on the intersection of image and the everydayness. In contrast, another aspect of his practice is more personal and emotional, without the empirical approach used in his research-based works. These pieces emerge from his own subjective experiences, often exploring themes in the mundane or in mysterious, ambiguous encounters. The methods of production and display in this part of his practice are more closely aligned with traditional, analogue painting methodology.

Kaizhe’s creative inquiry spans a wide range of themes, including form, materiality, semiotics in public spaces, accessibility, viewership, and human perception. Through this multi-layered approach, he seeks to critically engage with and deconstruct the complex issues and phenomena surrounding contemporary painting and image-making.


张凯喆(1999年) 是一位绘画与图像制作者,目前生活和工作于中国深圳。他于2018至2021年间在格拉斯哥美术学院学习绘画。与传统时间顺序的实践方法不同,张凯喆的创作实践同时受两种方法驱动:直觉经验和基于图像理论的研究。他认为,这两者都是图像创作与其理论分析的核心要素。他的许多研究性作品常被巧妙地融入公共空间,它们模仿日常事物的外观甚至是用途,不易被察觉,可一旦被察觉到有所蹊跷的目光凝视,就会制造出有趣的“隐秘破坏( vandalism )”的概念的讨论空间。而他的另一部分创作实践更偏向个人化和情感化,没有理论分析的铺垫,以个人的单纯视角在日常事物或者经历,甚至是模糊的神秘经验中寻找主题。在作品的制作与展示方式相较于前者的方法论,更接近传统物理绘画的概念。他的创作探索涉及形式、材料、社会空间中的图像学、可访问性(accessibility)、观众体验以及人类感知等主题。通过这种多层次的实践,他希望不断审视并拆解当代绘画与图像创作中的诸多现象及问题。
